Petrie (4502)
About 25 km to Brisbane’s north in the Moreton Bay Area, Petrie (4502) was named for one of its earliest inhabitants, Tom Petrie. Originally, Petrie was farmland and used for forest plantations. However more recently, the land has been subdivided for new residential housing estates, the growing population attracted by regular rail access to Brisbane, surrounding suburbs and the Sunshine Coast. Petrie is also busy with various industries including quarries, retail, and commerce including a host of automotive dealerships. As a community, Petrie is very active with sporting, social and community groups such as one of Queensland’s oldest Masonic lodges.
Petrie also encourages day tripper tourism focussed on its country markets, bushwalking, horse riding, and fishing. In 2011, 8500 people lived in Petrie, their average age being 34 years. About 90% are Anglo-Australian, with a minority from South Africa. English was the primary language spoken at home.
