Karana Downs (4306)
Located 22 km to Brisbane’s west and bordered by the Brisbane River, Karana Downs (4306) is a semi-rural suburb which was developed around a golf course in 1973. Karena Downs is a leafy suburb with numerous parks and a multitude of recreational facilities including boat ramps, playgrounds, fishing platforms, walking and cycling tracks. A school was established in 1882. Because of its proximity to the Brisbane River, parts of Karana Downs is vulnerable to flooding.
Due to its distance from Brisbane, transport is a challenge, although recently a maxi taxi service travels regularly to Bellbowrie with links to a Brisbane bus service. In 2011, 3800 people lived in Karana Downs, their average age is 36 years. Most residents were Anglo-Australian, although a minority were from South Africa. English was spoken almost exclusively at home.
