Located 20 km from Brisbane midway between it and Ipswich, was first explored in1823 by John Oxley, but more recently has been designated as a key transport oriented economic hub anchored by a major shopping centre, rail with regular access to Brisbane and a town plan which promotes high density, high rise. Despite this, native fauna and flora have been preserved by an extensive collection of 14 wildlife parks.
A wide range of established amenities, facilities, and services are situated in the central commercial shopping precinct adjacent the train station; namely, government, medical and financial services, Woolworths, various sporting clubs including athletics, football, lawns, and netball, an Aquatic Centre, three retirement villages, the Cultural Centre as well as a Scouts/Guides Groups. Goodna also has a couple of gyms and was the first to receive fast broadband services. There are some four schools in the area, the first being founded in 1870. Goodna is also home to a TAFE campus.
In 2011 about 8,800 people called Goodna home. Residents are young with an average age of 30 years and represent a multi-cultural group with some 40% born overseas, across a range of countries including New Zealand, Samoa, Vietnam, England, and India.
