St Lucia (4067)
Located just 6 km to Brisbane’s south-west and surrounded on three sides by Brisbane River, St Lucia (4067) is a highly prized affluent suburb, home to Brisbane’s most prestigious homes and the campus of Queensland University. Originally, the area was devoted to sugar plantations. William Wilson bought the Coldridge Plantation in 1882, renamed it St Lucia Plantation after his hometown in the West Indies, then subdivided the land for residential housing in 1883.
Today St Lucia is an old established leafy suburb, and primarily residential with a mix of high-density apartments and stand-alone large traditional Queenslanders with homes and apartments along the river commanding premium prices. Because of the University presence, it’s residents are an eclectic mix of students, international and domestic, wealthy professionals and affluent families. St Lucia also has a very sought after school, several community shopping villages, and one of Brisbane’s oldest golf clubs.
St Lucia is very well serviced by various forms of transport; namely, regular buses to Brisbane city and surrounding suburbs throughout the day and night; ferries up the river to Brisbane and further; various major arterial roads to the city; and bicycle routes throughout the suburb extending into surrounding suburbs and the city.
In 2011, 11200 people lived in St Lucia, their average age is 23 years due to the concentration of students. Residents were not only Anglo-Australian but also from a diverse range of countries including Malaysia, China, Singapore, and Vietnam; with Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Indonesian spoken alongside English at home.
