About 30 km north of Brisbane, Rothwell was named after the president of the RACQ who suggested a commemorative drive from Rothwell to Redcliffe lined by trees and is the base of a busy local airport. Rothwell is primarily a modern medium density residential area with some commercial development including shopping centres, large hardware and retail businesses. To support its growing population it has several schools including a college and will host a rail interchange linking Petrie to Brisbane. However, Rothwell is also prone to regular flooding.
As of 2011, there were about 6,600 people living in Rothwell, their average age is 36 years. About 84% were born in Australia, New Zealand or England and apart from English, Samoan was also spoken in a minority of cases at home.
