Located 40 km west of Brisbane and has a population of 200,000, Ipswich is projected to grow to 435,000 by 2031.
Noted for its architectural, natural and cultural heritage, Ipswich actively preserves more than 6,000 historical sites. Originally a mining colony in the 1820s, Ipswich was intended to be Queensland’s capital but Brisbane was chosen instead because of its port capability for ships. Ipswich was discovered by Captain Logan, Commandant of the Moreton Bay penal colony in 1826 when he discovered large deposits of limestone at the head of the Brisbane River. Prior to this, it had been home to numerous indigenous groups.
The town began as a limestone mining settlement, emerged as a major coal mining area and grew rapidly as a major inland port for expanding coal and wool industries and a regular paddle steamer transport service from Brisbane. This was replaced by road and rail transport with the construction of the Albert Bridge spanning the Brisbane River at Indooroopilly. Named after a town in England, Ipswich became a municipality in 1858, later to be proclaimed a city in 1904.
Damaging flooding has occurred on numerous occasions in Ipswich, the largest being the 1893 Brisbane flood peaking at 24.5 m during which 35 people died, and more recently, the 1974 Brisbane Flood peaking at 20.7 m during which 14 people died and 6,700 homes were flooded and the 2010–11 Queensland floods peaking at 19.4 m during which 38 people died.
Ipswich is particularly recognised for its historic buildings which range from Early Colonial/Victorian to Queensland Bungalow. However, because Ipswich is the fastest growing area in south-east Queensland, traditional buildings are increasingly being challenged by modern high-density multi-dwelling developments in award-winning master planned communities.
Ipswich has major public and private hospitals and is home to dozens of primary and secondary schools, including Ipswich Grammar School, Queensland’s first high school (1863), and Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School established 1892. The University of Southern Queensland has a campus at Ipswich while TAFE has a campus at Bundamba.
Ipswich lies at the hub of various interconnecting major transport routes. It has direct access to the Ipswich Motorway linking to Brisbane; the Cunningham Highway linking to Warwick; the Warrego Highway linking to Toowoomba; the Logan Motorway and its connection to the Pacific Motorway linking to Logan and the Gold Coast; and the Centenary Highway linking Springfield and the Ripley Valley. Ipswich Railway Station is also a major hub for rail transport with a rail line linking to Brisbane. Ipswich has more than 500 parks, golf courses, a conservation estate and even a raceway.
