Indooroopilly (4068)
Located 7 km to Brisbane’s west, Indooroopilly (4068) was originally settled in the 1860s for agriculture and dairying with the first house built in 1861. The advent of rail in 1875 and construction of a bridge across the Brisbane River increased development. A silver mine was operational from 1919 until 1929 when it became a teaching facility for engineering students. Indooroopilly is a major population centre with significant commercial and retail activity including one of Brisbane’s largest shopping centres opened in 1970.
Otherwise, Indooroopilly is largely residential mainly with high-density unit developments, some medium development townhouse blocks and a few remaining stand-alone post-war homes and traditional Queenslanders. To service residents, Indooroopilly has a cinema complex, numerous restaurants, various clubs, a golf course and a school. A major arterial road and a freeway run through the suburb with regular bus services to Brisbane and surrounds. Rail also connects Indooroopilly to Ipswich, Brisbane and northern suburbs.
In 2011, 11700 people lived in Indooroopilly, their average age is 29 years with the majority of residents Anglo-Australian and a minority from China, Malaysia, and India. Most spoke English at home, although Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, and Korean was also spoken in a limited number of homes.
