The ABIS library is a collection of useful reference material relating to buildings and their problems as well as timber pests such as termites.

The library is a combination of material written by ABIS as a result of our own research and practical experience together with useful information gleaned from other authoritative sources.

 

Termite Types: Single Site Nesters

Reproduction and life cycles

  • single developmental line ‘winged line'

  • all individuals can eventually mature into winged reproductives

Nesting behaviour

  • Entire life of colony is inside a single piece of wood
  • Unable to burrow through soil
  • Small queens
  • Small colony sizes (< 000s of termites)
  • Colony lifespan related to size of wood

Examples:

‘drywood' termites - Cryptotermes spp. and Kalotermes spp.

‘dampwood' termites - Porotermes adamsoni
