How the Other Half Live...

If you've ever complained that your apartment is a shoebox, Eunice Yoon of CNN suggests we consider the plight of Hong Kong resident Chung Lau who lives in a 58 square meter flat with 18 strangers.

His "cage home" is sectioned into tiny cubicles made of wooden planks and wire mesh packed with all his worldly possessions... hard to believe, considering Hong Kong's exorbitant luxury property market with a record-breaking sale of a $57 million duplex.

Chung's cage is one of several options. There's also a wire mesh version which resembles a rabbit hutch. Occupants have less privacy, but the temperatures aren't as unbearable as in Chung's home which can reach 34 degrees celcius.

And at $150 rent per month these cages aren't cheap. They are stacked on two levels... $100 for a cage on the upper deck and $150 for the lower bunk because you can just stand upright in them. The 19 occupants share two toilets and a small rubber hose attached to a leaky faucet is what they use to wash themselves. Do the math and the landlord is collecting roughly $2,500 per month!
